Unpopular opinion: Krispy Kreme

About a year ago I went to Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet for the first time with my mum and my nana. They’ve got so many fantastic shops and restaurants and I spent so much money there but one thing I bought in particular was my first Krispy Kreme doughnut.

They didn’t have a shop there, it was a Krispy Kreme van parked in the walkway so there wasn’t a lot of choice because it wasn’t very big. I had enormously high hopes because there’s obviously a lot of hype around Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but I was disappointed!

I chose the apple pie doughnut and it was hard and dry. The flavour was okay but the texture was awful and in the end I couldn’t finish it which, if you know me at all, is completely out of character! I love any and every kind of doughnut imaginable.

That terrible doughnut has tainted my view of Krispy Kreme forever so I’ve not had another since. They’re expensive so I don’t want to waste my money, but I think I should give them another chance.

Firstly, they wouldn’t be as popular as they are if all Krispy Kreme doughnuts were as bad as the one I had. People wouldn’t waste their money on a bad doughnut if they were cheap, never mind if they were as much money as Krispy Kreme!

Secondly, because I bought it from a Krispy Kreme van rather than a store I don’t know if that would have made a difference to the quality. It could have been bad because it was an old doughnut left over from the day before or perhaps they’re not made fresh when you buy them from a van.

Also there’s loads of types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts so maybe the apple pie one just isn’t for me. I could try some of the other ones and see whether I like those better. If you’ve got any recommendations please let me know in the comments!

I’ll do some research, have a think and I’ll definitely try another Krispy Kreme doughnut. Maybe I could do a follow up post and let you know how it goes? I really want to love Krispy Kreme because I love doughnuts and I know a lot of people think they’re fantastic.

Don’t forget to let me know your Krispy Kreme suggestions in the comments below and tell me what you think of Krispy Kreme, do you love them or loathe them?

  1. Haha I really like krispy kreme but you can get doughnuts which are just as nice from good old Greggs!I really like the strawberries and kreme one x

    1. I’ve never tried a Gregg’s doughnut! I’ll have to give one a try and see how they are, the strawberries and cream one sounds lovely! x

  2. Oh nooooo! It HAS to be a shop and they HAVE to be fresh. Otherwise they suck. In general they’re gummy , too much glaze, and an all around letdown if you get them from a van, grocery store, or anywhere that’s not the KK store. It could be the area/end of the country you were on too. I live in Maryland so our southern states have AMAZING Krispy Kreme; they’re still amazing even not fresh. But if you really want a good donut, you need a Fractured Prune donut!

    1. I’m definitely going to try another Krispy Kreme at some point and do a follow up post because a lot of people have recommended that I try one fresh from an actual store. I’ve never heard of Fractured Prune, I’ll have to look them up!

  3. Don’t let that one doughnut fool you, I’ve never tried the apple pie one but there are a lot of other choices which are amazing!

    1. Thank you Abigail, I’m definitely going to try another and do a follow up post. Thanks for reading! x

  4. I have an actual Krispy Kreme factory/store near me, so they’re always fresh and still warm! If you ever come across a real store and not just a food truck, try the original glazed! 🙂

    1. I’ll definitely try the original glazed next time Jessa, a lot of people have recommended that to me! Thanks for reading ☺

  5. I definitely recommend the original glazed doughnut from the store. It’s the cheapest doughnut too, so a good way of determining whether you would like the other flavours too. My favourite cheapo doughnut though is the original sugar ring doughnuts from Sainsburys!

    1. My favourite doughnuts are classic jam doughnuts! Either raspberry or strawberry, I don’t mind. Thanks for reading!

  6. I don’t get Krispy Kreme doughnuts very often, but I have a soft spot for the lemon meringue one they used to do (don’t know if they still do it)! But I agree with Kate above, they’re just as good as Greggs’ doughnuts! My absolute favourite from them is their caramel cream one…oh my gosh I’m salivating just thinking about it!!

  7. Krispy Kreme are great if it’s a shop & better fresh but I love them best in Birmingham’s Selfridge store as they’re made there so you can see & smell them at there best. My favourite is Strawberries & Kreme but a fresh glazed ring is lovely. Fresh, fresh, fresh is always best!

    1. I’m definitely going to try the original glazed, that’s what most people have recommended to me. Thanks for reading!

  8. I agree with you, Sophie. Disappointed. I love donuts. I love most kinds of donuts. Before Krispy Kreme came to our area of the U.S., friends of mine who had been to a store elsewhere in the States raved about them. I had high exceptions like you! I have had their donuts warm at the store or in a box brought to an event. They are usually dry and overly sweet (and I have a SWEET tooth!). I won’t be trying another one of their donuts as I now eat gluten free. Back in the day, I would go to the local grocery store for a donut before going to Krispy Kreme. Better or just as good and not as expensive!

Sluys Poulsbo Bakery (Norwegian) is about 1.5 hours from me. They make the best donuts. EVER. If you ever visit Washington State, be sure to go visit them. Get a couyple to eat and some more for later! My favorite is the Maple Doughboy. Check out their menu at http://sluyspoulsbobakery.com/products/ – click on “Donuts” and see photos of their selection.

I do love my donuts. My mother-in-law gave me a mini donut maker for Christmas a couple years ago. So now I make my own gluten free donuts. The donuts may be mini yet with a chocolate glaze, they are divine!

I would love to hear about your next Krispy Kreme experience. I agree with others who suggested trying it from a store when it is warm. If you still don’t like it, maybe you can post about making your own at home. 🙂

    1. I would LOVE my own donut maker! That’d be so cool, you could make any kind of donut you like! America seems to have a much bigger range of donuts than the UK. Probably because it’s a much bigger country I guess but I’m going to Birmingham this weekend so I’m hoping to try a couple more varieties. I’m sure they’ll have a bigger store than my local city. I’d love to try the new Nutella one! I’ll definitely write a post about it. Thank you for reading and commenting!
