A few months ago I wrote about how I don’t like Krispy Kreme doughnuts. It’s been one of my most popular posts so far and I’ve received lots of lovely comments suggesting that I give Krispy Kreme another shot. I never wrote the post in the hope that people would convince me to give them another try. However, in the end, that’s how it turned out so I thought it would be wrong for me not to.
Most people recommended that I try an original glazed doughnut rather than one of the fancy ones with toppings and fillings. The glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut is the original and believed to be the best, so I put it to the test with the help of my boyfriend Jordan. He doesn’t have it that bad, eh?
If you follow me on Instagram then you’ll already know that me and Jordan went to Birmingham for the weekend. Someone had recommended that I try a doughnut from the Krispy Kreme store in Selfridges in Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre, so that’s what we did. Jordan wanted to try the chocolate custard one, I wanted to try the Nutella filled doughnut and we both wanted to try an original glazed.
We started off with the original glazed. You could really tell that it was freshly made. It was soft and doughy and the glaze was sweet and sticky. The original glazed doesn’t need any fancy toppings or fillings, it’s perfect just the way it is. Now I understand why people rave about Krispy Kreme doughnuts!
Next we tried the chocolate custard doughnut which was Jordan’s pick. The doughnut was soft and doughy like the original glazed but we weren’t crazy about the topping or filling. I love chocolate but the topping was way too rich for me. I didn’t mind the custard filling but Jordan said it didn’t have much flavour. Overall an okay doughnut, but we probably wouldn’t choose it again.
Finally it was time to try the Nutella filled doughnut! I love Nutella so I had huge expectations for this one. Again, the doughnut was soft and doughy. The chocolate topping was much nicer than the topping on the chocolate custard doughnut and the crunchy nuts were a bonus. The highlight for me was the Nutella filling. I was afraid that there wouldn’t be enough filling and that it would be a massive let down but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The Nutella was literally oozing out of the doughnut, it was pure bliss!
I think it’s safe to say I’ve been converted, I am now a Krispy Kreme fan. A lot of people have told me their more adventurous varieties can be hit and miss and that their original glazed cannot be beaten. I think they’re right. Obviously I loved the Nutella doughnut, but the chocolate custard one wasn’t anywhere near as tasty.
I’m gonna be honest though, I don’t think they’re any better than your average jam doughnut. Jam doughnuts are simple, tasty and cheap. Krispy Kreme are tasty but one doughnut costs double the price of a pack of five jam doughnuts from the supermarket. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are nice for an occasional treat but I wouldn’t buy them regularly.
Let me know in the comments, have you tried the chocolate custard or the Nutella doughnut? What’s your favourite Krispy Kreme doughnut?
